The evolution of railroads and the intertwined growth of the sugar industry which came to dominate Cuba from 1837 onwards. Particularly interesting insights on the 19th century. The later focus is more on the role of tha railroads and their workers in the political developments - understandable given where the academics who published this book worked at the time.
