Description
The Cuban-controlled Compañía Azucarera Elia was established to build and operate the sizable Central Elia in the Camagüey province, Cuba. The company did not survive to 1938.
Specimen. Typical design for this second mortgage gold bond. Unusual vignette of two allegorical figures presumably making sacrifices at an altar topped by a flame and depicting a map of the North American continent, Around the figures attributes symbolizing trade, commerce and agriculture. Stamped “Specimen”, punchholes, 00000-numbered. The bonds were issued to finance the construction of the central and the start of operations.

As in many other cases the location given for the company changed after a few years - presumably when a town had grown around the mill - from St. Lucia to Elia.
